Grande Anse is very popular at weekends and its seafront is then lively. It is a vast bay with translucent waters bordered by a beach of blond sand. Its full west position allows it strong sunshine until late in the afternoon, which makes it a popular beach for swimming and snorkeling.
In 1768, Captain James Cook was sent to Tahiti to observe the Transit of Venus. He set up his observatory in Mahina, on the black sand beach at the end of Matavai Bay, now called Pointe Vénus. He later sailed off to nearby Moorea and a few years later, he sailed to New Zealand and Australia.
