Mostly shaded down and back hike. Be prepared for the uphill on the way back but it’s an amazing sight once you are in the crater floor. Like many of the hikes in the park this one is limited due to the instability of the grounds after the 2018 volcanic activity. It was hot and humid when we visited but even so it was worth it to see the crater up close. Do it!!
We always enjoy this hike—it feels like you are on a different planet in some areas. Easy hike; bring water.
One time we were on this hike and all of our cell phones rang at the same time. We answered them and it was an odd voice speaking a different language....almost sounded Russian. ALL AT THE SAME TIME. We were thoroughly freaked out. No idea what it was, and it’s never happened again on this trail (or any others) 😂
Such a good hike. Do yourself a favor and dress appropriately, good walking shoes and shorts since you WILL sweat. Such a great work out and the view at the end is a reward well worth the sweating and panting 😅
