Explore Abbey Caves, Whangarei, North Island

Abby caves is a group of 3 undeveloped caves you can explore for free. You will need lights. The Organ Cave is the largest of the caves and is easy going to the 50ft high cavern. You will see large overhanging stalactites which look similar to church organ pipes and a “starry night of glow worms”. In the Organ Cave you must enter and exit from the same point. “Organ Cave is like being in the bowels of a Bengal tiger - go see, the orange striping will amaze you!” Adventurer and author Scott Cook The Middle Cave and Ivy Cave are smaller and it is possible to enter and exit at different points. Middle Cave is the shortest with a slightly tricky climb out at the end. Ivy Cave has a short section of low ceiling after 60metres and you will see graffiti from the 1800s . In the last 15 metres of the journey the water gets deeper and the base is mud however, it is an easy climb out. All of the caves have thousands of glow worms.
