Functional Strength means developing the ability to move your own body around. Exercises designed to build functional strength leave you better able to perform everyday activities. Perhaps the best-known functional-strength exercise that requires the ability to lift your own body weight are pull-ups, which requires lifting your body with just the muscles in your chest, back and arms over a fixed bar. Proper technique and good functional strength is important to be able to continuously repeat the exercise 6 times. As a point of reference, the minimum level of fitness necessary to qualify for service in the United States Marine Corps is to be able to perform 3 pull-ups; to be considered in good physical condition at the age of 18 males are expected to manage 8 pull-ups with the number decreasing as the body ages.
