Australian Football League (AFL) Grand Final
View Original Description
The Australian Football League (AFL) is the governing body for professionals that participate in the game of “Aussie Rules” football that is quintessentially Australian. The league traces its origin back to the late 19thcentury. The AFL conducts a season of play over 23 weeks between its 18 teams during the Australian winter from March to September each year culminating in the “Grand Final” at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The ultimate game of each season is contested after a playoff series staged through most of the month of September at the MCG that includes the eight sides with the most wins during the regular season. The Grand Final is then staged on the last Sunday of September and attracts nearly 100,000 live spectators with millions more watching the epic contest for the Premiership Cup on television around the world.
The grand final is played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and is near impossible to get tickets to.
Aussie Rules football gained an international following with the advent of ESPN in the 1980’s and their inclusion of the exciting contests in their lineup. The game includes elements of American football, soccer and rugby with well-conditioned athletes involved in a grueling contest with typically prolific scoring. The Grand Final weekend in Melbourne includes a massive parade, musical performances, live interactive discussions with stars of the Australian Football League and other celebratory events.
