International Festival of Canoes, Maui, Hawaii
View Original Description
The International Festival of Canoes on the island of Maui is annual festival celebrating Pacific islands' seafaring heritage. Events include canoe paddling and sailing regattas, a luau feast, cultural demonstrations, canoe-building exhibits, and music.
Hundreds of spectators gathered along Kamehameha Iki Beach Park in Lahaina over the weekend to witness the ceremonial Lunching of Canoes. Master carvers from around Polynesia (Cook Islands, New Zealand, Tahiti, Tonga and Hawai'i) will spend two weeks shaping their canoes out of raw albesia logs.
The festival is held mid- to late May.
