Katakai Matsuri (Katakai Fireworks Festival), Katakai, Japan
View Original Description
The Katakai Matsuri, also known as the Katakai Fireworks Festival, is an annual event held in Katakai Town, Niigata Prefecture, Japan, dedicated to the Asahara Shrine. It's renowned for its impressive fireworks displays, including the world's largest, the yonshakudama, which is a four-shaku (1.2 meter) firework. The festival is not primarily for tourism; instead, it serves as a religious ceremony where individuals and groups donate fireworks as offerings to the shrine, with personalized messages accompanying each display.
Katakai is famous for the yonshakudama, a massive firework shell that creates a 800-meter-wide explosion.
The festival is held annually in early September, typically on September 9th and 10th, with fireworks launching in the evening. The fireworks displays occur from 7:30 PM to 10:20 PM on both days.
