Attend La Crépissage, Djenné, Mali

During La Crépissage, residents of Djenné, Mali, work together to repair and rebuild the Grand Mosque, the world’s largest mud-brick structure. It occurs each April in an epic one-day event called La Crépissage (The Plastering). The night before the rebuilding, the town hums with anticipation and villagers take part in a carnival of singing and dancing known as La Nuit de Veille, or The Waking Night. The regular maintenance of the mosque is made indispensable by the characteristics of the fragile material used, which undergoes a strong erosion by the combined action of the rain, the insolation and the changes of temperature (generators of cracks).
