Attend Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo Feast Day, New Mexico

Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo, formerly San Juan Pueblo, is one of the largest of the Tewa-speaking pueblos in New Mexico. It is home to the Eight Northern Indian Pueblos Council and the Oke-Oweenge Crafts Cooperative. They celebrate St. John the Baptist’s Feast Day on June 24thwith the Buffalo and Comanche Dances. For all pueblos, the actual feast day includes a Catholic mass that is held in the morning. Because of historical relations with the Catholic Church, all pueblos have a church located near the center of the village. Most Pueblo people practice aspects of both the Catholic religion and Pueblo belief systems. Most of these events are sacred. Please be sure to follow the rules of etiquette for each ceremony and pueblo. The tourism offices of each pueblo will provide you with their rules. For more information, you can call (505) 852-4820.
