24 Hours of Le Mans, France
View Original Description
24 Heures du Mans as this race is known in its home country of France is auto racing's preeminent competition involving speed, efficiency and endurance. The goal, unlike most fixed distance races, is to see how much of the track can be covered in a 24 hour period and modern winners achieve distances over 5000 kilometers, 6 times the distance of the Indianapolis 500 or 18 times the typical Formula One Race. The origins of the contest were for production automobile manufacturers to test and display their vehicles available to the general public but today's participants are racing highly customized automobiles. The crews are well trained and include a minimum of 3 drivers that alternate over the full day of competition. The city of Le Mans, located on the Sarthe River in Northwest France is incredibly scenic and provides ample opportunity for sight seeing and other worthwhile pursuits although the race track provides a week of activities leading up to the race itself. The 24 Hours of Le Mans has been staged annually since 1923 on the Circuit de las Sarthe that includes public roads (closed for the race) and a specialized motor racing circuit.
A trip to Le Mans to witness the race and take in the culture and history of this iconic event is worthy of inclusion on any auto racing enthusiast’s list. Tie this in to a dreamed about trip to France and surrounding countries and you have something special to anticipate.
