The Birdsville Races have come a long way since the first race meeting was held over 140 years ago. The iconic event can now boast that it is one of the richest race meetings in regional Australia with a significant entourage of spectators, owners, trainers and jockeys who make their annual pilgrimage to this remote location in outback Queensland. ‘Funds are raised in aid of the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia. On the first weekend in September Birdsville’s population will once again swell from a mere 100 to well over 7,000 as thousands of 4WD’s and hundreds of light aircrafts cross the desert to be a part of the outback’s largest racing carnival.
