View Original Description
Nearly one thousand anxious anglers enter the world’s richest billfishing tournament held each October offshore the resort town of Cabo San Lucas in Baja California, hoping to land the prize winning fish that in some years garners payouts in excess of 4 Million U.S. Dollars. Referred to as “The Super Bowl of Billfishing” the competition finds accomplished fishermen from more than 15 countries and nearly every State in the USA gathered at the southern tip of Baja California to try their luck during 3 days of fishing action. All it takes is a sea worthy vessel, a minimum $2,500US per team entry fee that can escalate to nearly $65,000US to cover all the likely reward possibilities and a worthy captain, crew and team of anglers.
A shotgun signals the start of the quest for that year’s monster billfish with more than 150 boats, many customized just for these types of excursions, piloting hopeful fishermen to their chosen spots to reel in what they hope are prize winning catches. Prizes are awarded for the largest aggregate weight of billfish caught by the teams with separate prizes for the captains of the vessels of the winners and an overall team winner catching the single largest Black or Blue Marlin garnering the Grand Prize. Daily jackpot payouts are also part of the mix of prize opportunities sought by the teams.
