Crashed Ice World Championship
View Original Description
Two thin blades, hairpin turns, jumps, drops and sheer speed are what the Crashed Ice World Championships are all about. Side by Side, 4 skaters careen downhill on the enclosed track for 300 meters in front of 10’s of thousands of screaming fans in an extreme sports contest that combines survival of the fittest, a little luck and sheer guts to determine an overall champion. The sport was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 2001 and is properly called “Ice Cross Downhill” but the adjective “Crashed” provides a sense of what the racers must avoid to be victorious. Run on marked tracks laid out on courses as varied as ski slopes, through fish markets and urban centers, the events typically feature 3 days of thrilling skating action that includes a day of practice, followed by time trial elimination runs culminating in the finals on the 3rd day where the 64 fastest surviving skaters will compete in front of more than 100,000 fans for the crown as the overall champion.
There are a series of preliminary races that have been held through the year in places like Moscow, Russia; Valkenburg, Netherlands; Lausanne, Switzerland; Helsinki, Finland; St. Paul, Minnesota and Munich, Germany but the finals to crown that year’s overall champion are traditionally held in March in Quebec City, Canada, considered the Mecca of Ice Cross Downhill.
Add the experience to Attend the Crashed Ice World Championship in Quebec City, Canada to your list to be among the excited fans that will be on hand to view this young, thrilling extreme sport that combines the best of downhill skiing, ice hockey, roller derby and motocross.
