Attend Melbourne Cup, Australia

The first Tuesday in November, during the Australian spring, sees the Melbourne Cup, the major horse race run each year in the Land Down Under. The race is run over 3200 metres of turf and is considered the richest and most prestigious turf race of that length in the world. It is an annual public holiday in the state of Victoria. The day of the race is a legal holiday in most of Victoria State, where the race is contested at the Flemington Racecourse and is affectionately referred to as “the race that stops a nation”. Australian citizens make reservations at their favorite pubs and restaurants all over the country to observe the race on television with their friends and co-workers. Being among the live spectators at this world class horse race is a worthy dream to include on your list. Gambling on horse races is engrained in Australian custom. The ability to put down a bet on The Melbourne Cup, either at the track on at one of the thousands of off-track betting parlors that dot the country (the “TAB”), attracts even the casual race fan. This is also a day that allows the Aussie women to put on a hat and other finery in celebration of this national treasure. A trip to Australia and Melbourne would not be complete without participation in the festivities of The Melbourne Cup. You can start making your plans now.
