Held annually in Hollywood, California, The Oscars (officially the Academy Awards) is the most prominent awards program for the film industry. Each year the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences honors the outstanding acting performances, film direction and production, costume designing, writing and various other technical categories associated with the previous year’s film productions. The winners of the awards in the various categories are presented with an iconic statuette, “The Oscar” at the awards show held in Hollywood’s Kodak Theater. The show presents performances by some of the preeminent artists in the music industry and tributes to actors and others in the film business in acknowledgment of their life’s work. For someone that is not a member of the elite group of actors, producers and directors typically in attendance the ability to personally witness the awards show can be a challenge if not impossible. One option to have the chance to mingle with Hollywood’s chosen few is to attend The Oscars as a “Seat Filler”. Approximately 150 people are selected to sit among the celebrities to make the theater appear to be full for the show. The application process can be rigorous and requires application at least a number of months in advance of the show. A chance to view the stars as they arrive for the program is possible by obtaining bleacher seats along the Red Carpet that greets the arriving personalities. For one week in September applications for those 700 grandstand seats are accepted with a drawing held at the end of the application week to identify that year’s lucky fans. Another opportunity for attendance is available to members of the press through the awarding of press credentials. There is also an annual application process for those coveted passes. Members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences may purchase tickets for themselves and their guests but keep in mind those tickets are non-transferrable. Those wishing to attend the awards program are strongly cautioned to avoid scalpers offering tickets to the public as these will most likely be forgeries or obtained illegally. If you have dreamed of attending The Oscars in Hollywood, California to possibly rub elbows with the stars and icons of the film industry then careful planning is required to have a chance to fulfill this fantasy. It’s not impossible but takes some diligent research and perhaps a little luck.
