Nearly kind of sport that is conducted on ice or snow can be witnessed at theWinter Olympic Games. Held every four years since 1924 when the first Winter Olympics were staged in Chamonix, France, this celebration for elite athletes will next be held in Sochi, Russia in 2014 and then in Pyeongchang, South Korea in 2018. Although presented at various locations around the world based on competitive bidding by the host city, The Winter Games have never been contested in the southern hemisphere. The games span a little over 2 weeks and the opening and closing ceremonies are typically a “can’t miss” celebration of the athletes and The Games. Recently the Winter Games have also included paralympic athletes and boast over 2500 participants from more than 80 countries competing for the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals.
