Molesworth Route, New Zealand
View Original Description
The 200 mile (320 km) ride along Molesworth Route in New Zealand is not for the uninitiated as it can get quite challenging. This route is one of New Zealand’s longest uninterrupted gravel roads and starts south of Blenheim in the Awatere Valley along Awatere Valley Road and Tophouse Road. To help with road name confusion, Molesworth is the name of this particular route based on the station the road runs though, not the actual road name itself.
Some bike-walking could be involved, but those that take on the task will earn a certain sense of accomplishment. It’s not all hard work, as refreshing downhill runs overlooking Molesworth Station, New Zealand’s largest working farm, go a long way to offset some strenuous climbs and a soothing hot springs awaits in the town of Hanmer. Open between the end of December 28 and April each year, this isolated bike route takes roughly five days to complete.
