Cave Creek Canyon near Portal Arizona is a favorite birder hotspot to Elegant Trogons, Painted Redstarts, Hepatic Tanagers, Zone-tailed Hawks, Strickland's Woodpeckers, Flammulated Owls and Whiskered Screech Owls.
Cave Creek Canyon is often called the Yosemite of Arizona, the rock walled canyon is composed of fused volcanic tuff.
Portal is the home to the American Museum of Natural History Southwest Research Station.
