Boat-In Camp at
Lava Wall, Ripper’s Cove or Paradise Cove, Catalina, California
View Original Description
Ripper's Cove is located 8.6 miles from Avalon and 4 miles from Two Harbors. Ripper's has 3 campsites. Campsite 1 is on the east side and on the beach, so watch the tides if picking this site. Campsite 2 is the best campsite. It offers some shade from several large pine trees and a nice picnic table. Campsite 3 is furthest west and is a large space but there is no shade from the sun. There are no moorings, but there is anchorage for less than a dozen boats in sand with fore and aft anchors. There is no lessee for this cove.
Paradise Cove is 8.4 miles from Avalon and 4.25 miles from Two Harbors. Paradise Cove, Santa Catalina Island, also known as Cave Beach, is a small beach located on the island's leeward side, just east of Ripper's Cove. There is a single campground in the cove accessible only by boat or kayak. There are no toilets or running water and fires are not allowed. The beach is sheltered under a protective rocky bluff, out of the wind on three sides. The beach is sand mixed with cobblestones and tumbled-smooth lava rocks of various colors. Closer to the waters edge it is mostly sand. (Watch for rattlesnakes.) Reservations from the Santa Catalina Island Company are required to camp here.
Lava Wall is 8.1 miles from Avalon and 4.5 miles from Two Harbors.
These are 3 of the 9 Boat-In Campsites on the island.
Santa Catalina Island has 17 sites at 9 Boat-In Campsites along the leeside shore of the island. These campsites can only be reached by boat or kayak, and you must pack in your own equipment and supplies. A ranger checks each campground every day.
Each Boat-In Campsite is unique in location and regulations. The sites are all primitive, with no running water, shade structures, moorings or sanitation stations. Campers are required to bring their own portable restroom and pack out any trash or waste. Because fires are not allowed, cooking must be done in a self-contained BBQ or camp stove.
Kayak rentals are available at Two Harbors Dive & Recreation Center, Descanso Beach Ocean Sports, Joe's Rent-A-Boat and Wet Spot Rentals. Selected camping equipment is available for rent from Two Harbors Visitor Services. For more information, please call: 310-510-4205.
