Water Canyon, Utah
View Original Description
Water Canyon is a great little technical canyon just north of the twin towns of Hildale and Colorado City, either side of the Utah-Arizona border and a short way south of Zion National Park. This slots has a little of everything canyoneers love including big drops, narrow slots, swimming pools, and an interesting pothole. Water Canyon is a popular place to learn or practise technical canyoneering.
The hike is about 3.3 miles and takes around 6 hours to complete. Start by hiking up the trail in the canyon to the mesa rim and then start down the canyon. The canyon will require 9 rappels including two of around 170ft.
The best time to climb is in the spring or fall seasons. Permits are not required since its on BLM land.
WARNING: Slot canyons are particularly dangerous due to the risk of flash floods. Storms far away can send walls of water down the narrow canyons and hikers have been killed in such events. In many slot canyons, it can be miles before a safe exit or rescue is possible. Hikers should check conditions carefully and not rely on seeing the sky to judge the weather. If there is even a slight chance of rain, do not enter slot canyons.
