Capstan (USS Constellation)
The ship’s capstan was used to weigh cargo and raise the ship’s anchor. This is a double capstan, with the second half on the Gun Deck below. Capstan bars were placed in the pigeon holes, and sailors turned the capstan to pull a rope. This rope could go through the masts and rigging, using the ship as its own crane system.
