Cliff Jump Puu Kekaa (Black Rock), Maui, Hawaii

At the tip of 3 mile (4.8 km) long Kaanapali Beach on the Hawaiian Island of Maui is found a popular Cliff Jumping location known as Black Rock or Puu Kekaa in Hawaiian. Black Rock is also a widely visited snorkeling and swimming location with countless reef fish, turtles and other sea life dispersed among the rocky outcropping that is below the ocean’s surface. Fearless and enthusiastic adults, teenagers and children all wait patiently for their turn to plunge into the temperate water after scaling the 10 meter high, or so, rock formation where natural platforms allow for jumps from varying heights. For those less daring, grabbing a spot on the beach to observe the Cliff Jumpers provides some entertainment while soaking up the sunshine. A professional cliff diving and torch lighting ceremony is also held at Black Rock every evening to coincide with the setting sun that includes tales from Hawaiian mythology. The program is free to the public. Consider including a jump from Black Rock on Kaanapali Beach into the warm Pacific Ocean on the Hawaiian Island of Maui on your list as part of your trip of a lifetime to the Hawaii. Chances are once you have conquered your fear of taking that first plunge you’ll scale the rock as many times as your schedule allows to repeat the performance.
