Climb
Roche Veyrand via Ferrata, Savoie, France
View Original Description
Roche Veyrand via Ferrata is a challenging via Ferrata track in the French Alps. The path is located in St. Pierre d'Entremont, in the Rhône-Alpes region and rewards climbers making the ascent with breathtaking views over the Chartreuse Mountains upon reaching the pinnacle. The via Ferrata is divided into two parts; the first is moderately difficult and suitable for guided beginners while the second leg is only for advanced hikers that will ascend to the via Ferrata’s highest point at 1,300 meters. Good climbing abilities and a reasonable level of fitness are required for those hoping to complete the entire loop.
The access trail starts from a parking lot near the Cozon River at the village of Saint-Pierre d'Entremont. The Via Ferrata is well marked with good signage. The breathtaking vistas from the Summit of Roche Veyrand include expansive views of Cirque de St. Even, the flat-top summit of the Dent de Crolles, Chamechaude, Summit Pinet, The Granier and Bear Tooth. There are 2 distinct options for the descent: one is a steep, direct path along a ridge that will require about an hour and ½ with the use of a few steel ropes while the second is a little gentler, taking about 2 hours on a steady pace while winding through the forest and a couple of charming hamlets before returning to Saint-Pierre d'Entremont. To make the entire loop requires a commitment of nearly an entire day depending upon how long the hikers spend at the summit.
The via Ferrata at Roche Veyrand is best reached from the French town of Saint-Pierre d'Entremont in Savoie, France through the airport in Geneva, Swizterland.
