Complete a
Ironman Triathlon
View Original Description
The composition of an Ironman Triathlon seems overwhelmingly daunting when first understood: In addition to a full marathon foot race (42.2 kilometers) contestants also must bike for 180.25 kilometers and swim another 3.86 kilometers. The race is always conducted in the order of Swim, Bike, Run with no breaks between the individual events. Most Ironman Triathlons require competitors to complete the grueling series of events in less than 17 hours, with interim benchmarks that must be met to be allowed to continue in the event. There are a series of Ironman Triathlons held each year around the world with the season ending Ironman World Championship held every October on the Kona Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. Ironman competitions provide separate divisions for men and women competitors as well as those that may be physically challenged. While the men’s record in the World Championship is just over 8 hours and the women’s, a little less than 9, the vast majority of athletes that enter the various qualifying competitions around the world typically are only focused on finishing the race. There are also group rankings that allow competitors to evaluate their performance against other similarly aged athletes.
Sanctioned events are held in many places each year; 9 each in Europe and the USA, 4 in Australia, 2 in Canada with additional races held in Brazil, South Africa, Mexico and New Zealand. There is also an Ironman half-distance series in significantly more locations where the components of the competition are cut in half. Sideshow events with entertainment and expositions geared toward the athletes are typically held in conjunction with the exciting competitions.
There may be no better motivator for extreme sports enthusiasts to travel to a part of the world they have only dreamed about to Complete and Ironman Triathlon. Add this exciting event to your list after finding the location that most strikes your fancy. If you start training today you might even qualify to compete in the World Championship in Hawaii.
