Visit Smrden grad, Croatia

Smrdan grad (also Smrden grad) is a fortress above the town of Klek along the old road that connected the Neretva valley with the Dubrovnik coast. Today's remains of the fort were built at the end of the 17th century on the site of a former fort from the Middle Ages , after the Venetians conquered it from the Ottomans in 1689. The fort has a triangular plan with ramparts of about 50 meters on each side. There is a quadrangular tower on its southeast part, and a circular tower on the northeast. A one-nave church with a rectangular apse and a nave bell tower was built inside the fortress at the beginning of the 18th century. First, it was dedicated to St. Roku, and then to the Great Lady. The complex is on the list of cultural assets of the Republic of Croatia, and a stećak necropolis was found near it. The fort got its name from the legend about the unpleasant smell of Ottoman corpses that were left on the approaches to the fort after an unsuccessful siege.
