Cruise Around the World

Jules Verne wrote about floating in a balloon while attempting to travel around the world in 80 days to win a bet. Astronauts periodically whiz around the entire circumference of the planet in a matter of hours. By whatever method, a trip around the world is a dream for many but recognized by only a relative few. A journey around the globe with visits to wonderful and exotic ports can be accomplished by taking a World Cruise on ships designated for just that purpose. The cruises call on tried and true stops along with those less known along their respective charted courses. Visits to such iconic ports such as Hong Kong, Rio de Janeiro, Beijing, Sydney, New York and Southampton are regulars on many itineraries but consider that your World Cruise might include stops in Honolulu, Sydney, Auckland, Singapore, Bangkok, Yokohama, or any number of other great cities and may even include lesser known and sometimes “maiden” ports with their own awaiting treasures such as those in Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Easter Island, Dubai, Turkey, Antarctica or Indonesia. The possible itineraries provide limitless options. Around the world cruises may be accomplished on a single vessel that becomes your home for the entire duration of the trip or by combining separate cruises. Other options include “Boomerang” cruises that take passengers half way around the world on one vessel and either immediately transfer those continuing with the circumnavigation to another ship or provide for a stay at the terminus for a week, a month or a year after the first leg, before either venturing onward or returning to the point of origin by a distinctly different route. The traditional version of a World Cruise departs in January, just after New Year’s Day and returns 3 months or so later and many of the World Cruise providers still offer these customary dates. Modern itineraries aren’t limited to those traditional sailing dates and allow for the possibility of a World Cruise at nearly any time of year with durations that match the traveler’s schedule and budget. Options for cruise ships run the entire spectrum from famous vessels such as the QE2 handling 1,500 passengers on an 80 day excursion with stops in 22 countries to smaller vessels with much lower passenger counts that can visit off the beaten track Ports of Call that can only handle the more nimble vessels. The options available for a Cruise Around The World are limited only by the traveler’s imagination. If a trip around the world on a cruise ship is something you have been dreaming of then add this adventure to your list and start reviewing the map to make sure you find an itinerary that navigates the seas you want to traverse and visits the ports of your fantasy.
