Cruise the
River Seine, Paris, France (UNESCO site)
View Original Description
The River Seine stretches 776 kilometers from Source Seine, near the town of Dijon, in northeastern France to the English Channel at La Havre after bisecting Paris geographically as well as culturally near the middle of its route. The Right Bank (La Rive Droite) of the River Seine has historically been associated with an elevated level of sophistication and elegance in Parisian society while the Left Bank (La Rive Gauche) is more identifiable to those pursuing a lifestyle that is more Bohemian in nature. The iconic Champs Elysees is perhaps the most famous street found on the Right Bank. The Left Bank is where famous artists, writers and philosophers preferred to spend their time and is the location of Paris’ Latin Quarter and the University of Paris. Such historic Parisian landmarks as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Place de la Condorde, the Grand and Petit Palais, and the Cathedral of Notre-Dame (along with many others) may be seen from the decks of the tour boats that follow the Seine’s path as the river winds its way under 37 bridges. The banks of the Seine have been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a nod to the evolution and history of Paris that found the River at its core.
Cruises on the River Seine are popular with visitors to the City of Lights. The options for craft available for cruising on the Seine range from the Batobus (offering hop-on, hop-off service), which sails up and down the river with stops at 6 of the main attractions to luxury vessels providing specific themed sight-seeing cruises. Short duration cruises with particular cultural targets, cruises that are timed to experience the sunset and those emphasizing the most romantic of the Parisian landmarks are among the offerings of tour operators. Dinner cruises that expose the illuminated magic of Paris at night and on-board lunch cruise options are also popular options.
