Galápagos Islands
View Original Description
The Galapagos Archipelago was first discovered by Spaniards in the 16thcentury and was the location for many of the famous studies by Charles Darwin that led to the publication of his thesis “The Origin of the Species” relative to his theory about evolution. It is a collection of islands where many one-of-a-kind species abound and possesses incredible, unspoiled beauty. These mostly volcanic islands are distributed about the equator off the coast of Ecuador. The islands form the core of an Ecuadorian Province, a national park and a biological marine reserve. The 18 main islands support a population of around 25,000 inhabitants and are home to such unique species as Galapagos Hawks, Blue-Footed Boobies, Giant Tortoise, Marine Iguanas as well as sea lions, dolphin, pelicans, flamingos, sea turtles, rays and sharks along with many other tropical birds and gulls. Volcanic eruptions are known to occur occasionally on the islands.
Cruising among the Galapagos Islands typically ranges in duration from 5 to 8 days. Vessels range from smaller motor yachts accommodating as few as 10 or 12 passengers to larger craft carrying 100 or more cruisers. Adventures offered by the cruise operators include diversions such as hiking on lava fields where many of the land based animals may be observed in their natural habitat, Snorkeling and SCUBA diving, exploration of multi-colored sand beaches, kayaking and walking tours. Extensions for visiting Ecuador and Peru are also popular among those choosing to take a cruise among the Galapagos Islands. Most travelers make their way to the Galapagos through Quito, Ecuador.
Your dream of replicating the travels of Charles Darwin or just observing some of the unique wildlife that stimulated his discoveries is as close as adding a cruise in the Galapagos Islands to your list. You may be in that part of the world to visit Machu Pichu or any of the other equatorial delights in South America. You don’t want to miss the beauty and mystery of the Galapagos Islands while you are there.
