Mediterranean Sea
View Original Description
The Mediterranean Sea is a massive inland body of water fed by the Atlantic Ocean through the Strait of Gibraltar separating Europe from the African continent all the while bordered in large part by Spain, France, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Albania, Greece, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Israel, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco along with a number of other countries. The Mediterranean’s Eastern boundary is connected to the Black Sea by the Dardanelles and the Bosporus. To the south, the Mediterranean is connected to the Red Sea by way of Egypt’s Suez Canal. The larger islands found in the Mediterranean include Ibiza, Majorca and Minorca in the west; Sardinia, Corsica, Sicily and Malta in its middle; Cyprus, Crete, Rhodes, Lesbos and Corfu in the eastern Mediterranean. Such famous tourist spots such as the French Riviera, Italy’s Ligurian Coast, Spain’s Costa del Sol and the Greek Islands abut or are surrounded by the Mediterranean’s waters.
The unbeatable combination of a pleasant climate, beautiful coastline and a rich, diverse history and culture contributes to the Mediterranean region’s reputation as the most popular tourist destination in the world. Cruising the waters of the Mediterranean is a favorite method for visiting this area and opportunities to spend time moving about the coastal cities and iconic islands are provided by many cruise lines (including most major cruise ship operators) that can have passengers dining in an Italian Trattoria, browsing ruins in Turkey and then soaking up the sun on pristine Greek beaches all in the span of a week. Most cruises range from 7 to 14 days but trips of a longer duration are also very popular. Ships from smaller yacht-like vessels to floating resorts are among the varied choices. The cities available for starting or ending cruises in the Mediterranean region number in the hundreds as do the Ports of Call. Options to begin and end cruises from far away ports such as those on the east coast of the United States or Southampton, England are among the possibilities along with many other distant points of embarkation.
Your dream of moving about the Mediterranean Sea to visit exotic and historic ports in Europe, Asia and Africa is limited only by your imagination. You’ll need to spend time planning the places you want to visit. Some locations might already be included on your list and visiting these dream destinations as part of a cruise on the Mediterranean Sea will truly make for the trip of a lifetime.
