Cruise through Panama Canal, Panama

The Panama Canal is an 82 kilometer canal that links the Pacific Ocean with the Atlantic, cutting across the Isthmus of Panama on the link between the North American and South American continents as an important component of international maritime trade. The canal is considered one of the 7 Wonders of The Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. Completion of the canal in 1914 eliminated the need to route ships around Cape Horn and the treacherous waters of the Magellan Strait at the extreme tip of South America. Use of the canal cuts travel time between the points on either side by one-half. Cruises that include a trip through the Panama Canal are very popular and the largest ships that can make the transition through the Isthmus with the use of locks and fresh water lakes are referred to as “Panamax”. The classic Panama Canal cruise typically last 14 or 15 days with its beginning or end in the American States of Florida or California with embarkation and disembarkation at such popular Ports as Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco on the USA’s West coast and Miami or Ft. Lauderdale on the Eastern shores. The cruises may take on the form of one-way experiences or round trips. Depending on the routing, Ports of Call along the way may include stops in Mexico (such as Acapulco and Guatemala), Central America (Cartagena, Limon, Puerta Caldera and Puntarenas among the most popular) and the Western Caribbean (Aruba, Turks and Caicos and the Bahamas are frequently visited). The Panama Canal cruises can be expanded to include Ports further from the canal, such as Vancouver, BC, Canada or any number of Ports in Western Europe. Passage through the Panama Canal is also included on itineraries for many “Around the World” Cruises. The passage through the Panama Canal provides cruisers a day long opportunity to observe their ship (and others) as they maneuver through the locks and gates at the line of demarcation on the Continental Divide with the scenic backdrop of rainforests and picturesque Lake Gatun. You dream of cruising through one of modern man’s most ingenious engineering achievements may be accomplished by taking a cruise that passes through the Panama Canal. You’ll need to spend some time planning which fascinating Ports along the way will truly make for your fantasy fulfilled. Add this adventure to your list today.
