Cruise U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI)

St. Thomas is the capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands, its most developed city and the center of island life. St. Thomas offers a full spectrum of activities including snorkeling, SCUBA diving, golf, hiking and sailing along with dramatic mountainous scenery, crystal clear water and idyllic white sand beaches with swaying palm trees. St. Thomas’ city of Charlotte Amalie is often found as a Port of Call on the itineraries for cruises that visit the Eastern Caribbean. The town is considered a mecca for duty-free shoppers. Close by St. Thomas is St. John, another of the U.S. Virgin Islands, the home of the U.S. Virgin Islands National Park which occupies 75% of the island. Heavily forested land opens up to reveal white sand beaches lined with palm trees. St. John has great appeal to those travelers that enjoy unspoiled, natural settings. St. John is accessible from St. Thomas by a short ferry ride. St. Croix is sometimes included as a Port of Call for cruise ships visiting the Eastern Caribbean. It displays its Danish heritage with windmills scattered across the landscape of rolling hills and old plantations. Snorkelers and nature lovers will be pleased to find the only underwater national park in the USA, Buck Island Reef National Monument, just off the coast of St. Croix. The waters of the Reef provide habitat for more than 250 species of fish, Spotted Eagle Rays, Lemon Sharks, Nurse Sharks, Black Tip Sharks and White-tip Reef Sharks among the abundant sea creatures while the beach is the birthing home for Leatherback Turtles. Ferry service between St. Thomas and St. Croix makes the island accessible to cruisers docked in St. Thomas. The cruise terminal at Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas is the most frequently visited dock in all the West Indies. The Ports of Call in the U.S. Virgin Islands, especially St. Thomas, are frequently included in cruises focused on the Eastern Caribbean. Cruise ships with embarkation in San Juan, Puerto Rico as well as various ports in Florida, New Jersey and Maryland include visits to the US Virgin Islands in their itineraries, often combined with stops at other Ports of Call in the Southern and Eastern Caribbean such as Grenada, St. Lucia and St. Maarten. Your trip of a lifetime to fulfill your dream to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands may be best accomplished by adding a cruise to this idyllic island nation to your list. There are plenty of options available and your goal for the next period of time is to plan the best time and reserve a cabin on the ship that best fulfills your needs for your cruise.
