Ko Lanta (Koh Lanta) Yai Island, Krabi, Thailand
View Original Description
Ko Lanta Island offers a great mix of things to do with great beaches, excellent restaurants, 5 star accommodation, a wonderful National Park, the old town and much much more.
Ko Lanta Yai is in the Andaman Sea off the west coast of Thailand, between the Phi Phi Islands and the mainland. Together with neighboring Ko Lanta Noi which forms Ko Lanta archipelago and several other islands it forms the amphoe of Ko Lanta District. The island is 25 km (16 mi) long and 6 km (3.7 mi) wide, with an area of 81 km2 (31 sq mi), and a small portion of it belongs to the Mu Ko Lanta National Park.
Ban Saladan, the main town and port, is at the northern tip of the island and is served by ferries from Krabi, Phuket, and Phi Phi. The main beaches are on the western shores of the island, the largest being Klong Dao, Pra-Ae (Long Beach), and Klong Khong Beach. There are other, much less accessible, beaches at the southern end.
The best time to visit Ko Lanta for a beach vacation is during the dry season, typically from November to April. This period offers minimal rainfall, moderate humidity, and comfortable temperatures. The tourist season runs from October through April with the most visitors here December to March. Most crowded during the Green Season (May to October) when daily rainfall usually only lasts a few hours.
