Dive Isla de Mona, Puerto Rico

Mona (Isla de la Mona) is the third-largest island of the Puerto Rican archipelago. It's located in the Mona Passage, a strait between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, the others being Monito Island and Desecheo Island. The island has a variety of caves, hard and soft corals, the plethora of big animals, from sharks to humpback whales and high-voltage currents, it's like diving the Galapagos Islands, but in warmer waters. Almost all divers here are on live-aboard boats. Land-based operators make only rare, special trips to dive sites here. The island measures about 11 km by 7 km (7 miles by 4 miles), and lies 66 km (41 mi) west of Puerto Rico. The island is a natural reserve and, though there are no native inhabitants, rangers from the island's Department of Natural and Environmental Resources reside on the island to manage visitors and take part in research projects.
