Roatán Island, Bay Islands, Honduras
View Original Description
Roatan Island is the largest in the collection of islands, cays and islets that make up Honduras’ Bay Island chain. The island is protected by the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, junior only to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef in size. This thriving reef system and the wrecked ships that are found in the waters surrounding the island create habitat for a large variety of ocean life including Whale Sharks and Hammerheads among the 300 or so species of fish and more than 150 types of coral. Dive shops and resorts operate at a number of locations around the island offering certification, lessons, excursions, fun dives, instructor development programs and equipment rental.
Among the scores of favorite spots for divers is Barbareta Wall, a 2 kilometer long steep wall that provides its fair share of encounters with the larger specimens that roam these waters; The Enchanted Forest, part of a large reef and offshore bank with dramatic drops that shelter large Grouper and Creole Wrasse; Wreck Diving the “Prince Albert” (a 50 meter tanker) and the “El Aguila” (a 75 meter long cargo boat) that has been adapted for penetration diving; Doc’s Elbow provides a great location for night dives with a large variety of Lobster, Octopus and Reef Crabs; Mary’s Place, one of the most popular dive sites in Roatan, a series of crevices that harbor Rope and Tube Sponges, deep water Seafans and Black Coral; Trunk Turtle Bay Beach, a snorkeler’s and shallow dive paradise.
