Dive with
Hammerhead Sharks
View Original Description
Perhaps no creature in the ocean generates the level of simultaneous awe and curiosity as a Hammerhead Shark when seen in the wild. The nine known species of Hammerhead Sharks range from just under 1 meter (3 feet) to 6 meters (20 feet) in length. The thinking is that the “hammerhead” is an evolutionary result that provides a 360 degree vertical vision plane for the voracious feeders. Daylight finds the Hammerheads congregating in “shoals” of more than 100 animals at times; as the sun sets they divorce themselves from the shoal and become solitary feeders. Hammerhead Sharks are at the foundation of a number of mythical traditions such as the reverence paid to the unusual creatures in the Hawaiian culture where the Hammerhead Shark is considered a god of the sea and protector of humans, perhaps even reincarnated family members.
Diving among Hammerhead Sharks is an adventure that is available at a number of locations around the globe. The massive creatures are most often found in warm, tropical waters relatively close to the shorelines of ocean islands. Some of the locations across the globe that offer the opportunity to observe Hammerhead’s in their natural environment includes Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands, the deep water atolls near Malaysia, the Gordo Banks near Cabo San Lucas in Mexico, Komodo Island’s Marine National Park in Indonesia, Cocos Island of Costa Rica, South Padre Island, Texas, USA and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Hammerhead Sharks, in spite of their fierce appearance, have a reputation as being non-aggressive toward humans.
