Dive with
Hammerhead Sharks off Cocos Island, Costa Rica
View Original Description
Costa Rica’s Cocos Island (Isla del Coco) is an uninhabited land mass located about 550 kilometers (340 miles) from the country’s Pacific Coast. The region has been preserved as a Marine National Park and has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Merging currents, deep water and plenty of nutrition makes the waters off Cocos Island attractive to all sorts of ocean life including Hammerhead Sharks. The area presents at least 20 named dive sites, all in close proximity to each other making the region around Cocos Island perfect for a live-aboard adventure. Hammerhead Sharks are typically seen in shoals numbering in the hundreds, all the while mingling with other species such as White, Black and Silver Tipped reef sharks, Tiger sharks, Manta and Eagle rays and Moray eels along with dolphins, killer whales and turtles.
Dive operators in the Costa Rican oceanfront town of Puntarenas stand prepared to provide boats and equipment to accommodate diving excursions to Cocos Island. The adventures are all multi-day in duration since it takes about a day and a half to reach the diving sites from coastal Costa Rica. Diving excursions scheduled between December and May will find the calmest water conditions while the ocean’s nutrient quality is highest between June and December which attracts greater numbers of the large pelagics, including Hammerhead Sharks.
Divers with the dream to observe large numbers of Hammerhead Sharks in their own environment may very well need to add Dive with Hammerhead Sharks off Cocos Island to their list. Once you have included this adventure on your list, do the homework to find just the right experienced local operator that will guarantee that your trip of a lifetime to this Central American diving mecca will be truly unforgettable.
