Hammerhead Sharks off Gordo Banks, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
View Original Description
A well-known and documented underwater mountain (aka Sea Mount) about 5 miles (8 kilometers) from the coast of Baja California’s San Jose Del Cabo in Mexico known as Gordo Banks provides perfect habitat for all kinds of sea life, including large shoals of Hammerhead Sharks. The top of the Sea Mount is found at about 130 feet (40 meters) and the surface has been described as having an appearance like that of the moon, all the while teeming with sedentary sea life such as coral, star fish and sponges. The expectation of seeing Hammerhead Sharks in the adjacent deep water is the main attraction but other large, open ocean fish like Tuna, Marlin and Manta Rays are encountered on most dives along with huge schools of jacks, snappers and grunts.
Prime season for diving at Gordo Banks that provides the best opportunity to experience Hammerhead Sharks is between August and November each year. Tour operators offer dive trips that run from single day excursions including 2 dives to multi-day adventures on live-aboard charters. Gordo Banks is approximately one hour by boat away from the docks in Cabo San Lucas and San Jose Del Cabo from which a number of dive tour operators regularly offer the SCUBA excursions. Although calm conditions and clear water are the rule, the dive is recommended for experienced divers only due to the depth of the dive required to reach the Sea Mount.
