Dive with Hammerhead Sharks off Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

Among the myriad treasures found in the famous waters off the Galapagos Islands are schools (shoals) of Hammerhead Sharks. Mostly located near Wolf Island and Darwin Island the local population is dominated by the Scalloped Hammerhead species (Sphyrna lewini), so named because of the notch found on either side the extension that gives the curious looking shark its name. Hammerheads in this region tend to gather near rocky outcroppings, reefs and submerged sea walls. Hammerheads are known to be regularly seen near popular snorkeling spots as well as in locations frequented by SCUBA divers. Scalloped Hammerheads can reach length as much as 4.5 meters (13 feet).
