Drink Beer at
Lightning Brewery, Poway, California
View Original Description
Like all homebrewers, owner Jim Crute went through the necessary rite of passage by brewing his first batch of self-proclaimed “terrible beer” in 1982. A biochemist by trade, Crute had a few key pieces of knowledge about the chemistry of brewing that helped lessen the learning curve tremendously. In 2005 – 23 years after his first homebrewed batch of beer – Crute jumped on the burgeoning craft beer trend in San Diego by launching Lightning Brewery in Poway. Once Lightning Brewery was contracted by a reputable distributer, Lightning beer flew off the shelves. In 2011, sales and production doubled and bottling capacity was put in place.
Tasting room hours are Fridays from 1:30-7 p.m. and Saturday from 1-5 p.m. Four-ounce tasters are available for $1 each or 6 for $5, and growlers, 22-ounce bottles and six packs are also available for purchase. Group brewery tours hosted by brewery founder James Crute himself are available by appointment throughout the week and weekend. Because of the small size of the brewhouse, group tours are limited to six guests.
