View Original Description
Located on Naval Air Station North Island. If you're a service member or know a service member you need to stop by here.
“The World Famous” I-Bar is located on Naval Air Station North Island. It has existed in an official capacity since the 1950s but has served as an unofficial aviator hangout since the 1930s. In July 2019 an extensive renovation was completed.
Bachelor Officers Quarters Building “I” was completed in 1933. When NAS North Island acquired United States Army Air Corps’ Rockwell Field in 1939, the “bar” in Building “I” was initially reserved for senior officers. In 1956, the Tailhook Association held its founding meeting there–perhaps giving rise to bar’s reputation as being “World Famous.”
It is the birthplace of the Tailhook Association and also served as the inspiration for a fictionalized version of the I-Bar is slated to play a part in the Top Gun sequel.
The ceiling is filled with model ariplanes, many of them built by legendary former bartender Walter Simmons. The walls is covered with patches, plaques and a Distinguished Flying Cross.
Just make sure to follow all the rules or you will be buying the entire bar a round.
