Drive Hāmākua Coast, Big Island, Hawaii

It’s a scenic drive through green valleys and rainforests. There are plenty of small towns to check out along the way. Be sure to stop at the Akaka Falls State Park to see some magnificent waterfalls. The Hāmākua Coast is on the northeast coast of Hawaiʻi's Big Island. Hāmākua's coast is approximately 50 miles (80 km) long ending at Waipiʻo Valley and the uninhabited Waimanu Valley. Popular recreation sites along the Māmalahoa Highway include Akaka Falls, Umauma Falls, Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, World Botanical Gardens and Kolekole Beach Park. The Saddle Road (Route 200) travels from Hilo through the inland part of the district, providing access to the high plateau between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, and roads to the astronomical observatories on the summit of Mauna Kea and the NOAA observatory high on Mauna Loa.
