Drive El Portal Road (Highway 140), Yosemite Valley, California

NOTE: Due to a landslide, California State Route 140 will remained fully closed between Briceburg to the Yosemite Cedar Lodge and there is no estimated time when it will reopen. Drivers should avoid this route and seek alternative highways (SR-41, SR-120) to and from Yosemite National Park. The El Portal Road (Highway 140) into Yosemite Valley is only about 12 miles in length, taking you to El Portal, CA. The first two miles of the El Portal Road from the park boundary is signed as a no-stopping zone. A ponderosa pine forest borders the highway on both sides as it passes through Midpines. As it approaches Briceburg, the roadway follows a steep, winding grade down to the Merced River valley. The highway then runs alongside the Merced River for 20 miles to the park entrance, after passing through El Portal before finally entering Yosemite Valley, where it ends. The upper stretch of the Merced River valley below the park, which the highway follows, is designated as Wild and Scenic River Area. The area separates Sierra National Forest (south) and Stanislaus National Forest (north). From spring through fall, you are likely to experience congestion in Yosemite Valley and at park entrances. Be prepared for delays, especially in afternoons and on weekends. Plan accordingly and use restrooms when available. It is best to arrive early in the morning or in the late afternoon to find parking and avoid traffic delays.
