Drive the 28-mile one way (56 miles rountrip) Racetrack Road in Death Valley National Park, California. Take a four-wheel- or all-wheel-drive vehicle on this long washboard road that passes Joshua trees on the way the "Sailing Stones" at Racetrack Playa. The road to Racetrack Valley begins near Racetrack Valley begins near Ubehebe Crater.
At twenty miles in you will reach Teakettle Junction. Follow the road straight ahead to the Racetrack playa. The road to the left leads into Hidden Valley and connects with the Hunter Mountain road which usually requires 4- wheel-drive to travel. Two miles further the short spur road to the right leads to the Ubehebe Lead Mine. It operated during the late 1800's and again during World War I.
Vehicle needed: High-clearance due to loose gravel, washboard and rocks. Flat tires are common on this road so be sure your full-sized spare is inflated, all parts of your jack are on hand and tire tread is good. May require 4WD due to changing road conditions and irregular maintenance, so check postings.
Distance: 28 miles to Racetrack.
Start: Ubehebe Crater Road.
Camping: No camping first two miles and from Teakettle Junction to the southern end of the Racetrack.
Note: If you want to continue south to Saline Valley and your a experienced 4WD driver, then take the 5.9 mile Lippincott Road which starts 3.5 miles south of the Racetrack. Rough 4WD. Very steep, narrow, and winding with cliff edge washouts. Uphill traffi c has right of way. Lower part has very narrow section that is diffi cult for wide vehicles. Subject to closure after washouts from heavy rains.
