Drive unpaved route from
Mendoza to Uspallata, Argentina to see Mt. Aconcagua
View Original Description
Rent a car (4WD not necessary but be absolutely sure your spare tire is fit for service) and drive the incredibly scenic and rugged road through Villavicencio and over the "pre-cordillera" to the remote town of Uspallata. Continue driving on the nicely paved towards Mt. Aconcagua and stop to admire its incredible rugged beauty. Assuming you don't intend to climb it, walk the short interpretive trail to learn about its history and see prehistoric fossils that show this area once was an ocean floor. Continue towards the Chilean border and see if your car and the weather will cooperate and let you visit the Christ of the Andes (Cristo Redentor) statue. Along the entire drive, see the extraordinary effect of snowmelt erosion on the surrounding landscapoe and be sure to stop at the Puente de los Incas natural formation and abandoned resort as well as the Cemetery for climbers who perished on Mt. Aconcagua.
