Drive through the
Guoliang Tunnel Road, China
View Original Description
The Guoliang Tunnel is carved along the side of and through the Taihang Mountains, in the Hunan Province of China. The tunnel passes through the side of an almost vertical section of a mountain with many holes that looks likes windows.
Before the tunnel was constructed, access to the nearby Guoliang village was limited to a difficult path carved into the mountainside. The village is nestled in a valley surrounded by towering mountains cut off from civilization. In 1972, a group of desperate villagers decided to take matters into their own hands - they would carve a road right into the side of the mountain by themselves. Thirteen villagers began the project. Some of the villagers died in accidents during construction.
It took them five years to finish the 1,200-meter-long tunnel (under a mile) which is about 5 meters high (15 ft) and 4 meters (12 ft) wide and has more than 30 windows that provide a stunning view of the steep cliffs.
The villagers have come up with a clever marketing slogan: The Road that does not tolerate any mistakes.
Photos of the road are often misidentified as photos of the "Road of Death" in Bolivia.
