Drive or Mountain Bike Transcontinental Railroad Backcountry Byway, Utah

The Transcontinental Railroad Backcountry Byway follows almost 90 miles of the Central Pacific Railroad Grade following an old railroad grade and travels through remote settings. Today, cattle graze where thousands of Chinese immigrants labored in 1869 to open the West to industry and commerce. The Transcontinental Railroad Back Country Byway is interpreted at over 20 sites along the grade. There are no services available along the route; be prepared with at least one spare tire, extra water, and gas if needed. There are opportunities to leave the railroad grade and return to Highway 30. Gas and services are available in Snowville, Tremonton, Corinne or Brigham City to the east and Wendover to the west. Limited fuel services are available in Park Valley to the north and Montello to the west. If you are planning to drive the entire, be prepared to spend 3-4 hours in remote mountain conditions. A low clearance passenger vehicle can easily drive from Promotory Point to Kelton, but there may be obstacles if you continue further like small ditches, washouts, and large pot holes; be prepared to turn around if you get stuck. While the route is narrow, two way traffic is permitted - pull over and pass in a safe location. To reach the eastern starting point follow SR 83 to Golden Spike National Monument, follow signs for backcountry byway.
