Shop at Djeema El-Fna Souk (Jemaa el-Fnaa), Marrakesh, Morocco (UNESCO site)

Jamaa el Fna, the vibrant heart of Marrakesh's medina quarter, is a cultural tapestry rich in history and tradition. The largest traditional souk in Morocco is found in Marrakesh, the Djeema El-Fna, inhabited by merchants, dancers, story-tellers, tattoo artists, magicians and musicians by day and then transformed into a huge open air restaurant at night as the food vendors move into the square. Limitless shopping for bargains can be found at the various marketplaces and visitors to Marrakesh find touring tanneries another interesting experience. This bustling square is a UNESCO-recognized masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity, reflecting a centuries-old tradition of cultural exchange and storytelling. By day, it's a kaleidoscope of merchants and entertainers. As night falls, the vendors are joined by tribal drummers, ladyboy dancers and mobile restaurateurs selling delicious grilled meats, bread and salad from their stalls till past midnight.
