The celebration has been staged continuously since 1904, complete with fireworks, confetti and the iconic ball drop that began in 1907. The crystal orb is specially designed and manufactured by the Waterford Crystal Company for each year’s celebration. The ball currently in use weighs 5,386 kilograms, uses LED lighting that can generate over 16 million colors while dropping from a flagpole rising 145 meters above Times Square. The ball contains over 2,600 crystal triangles. Plan on getting to Times Square no later than mid-afternoon to guarantee a good spot and take in all the celebratory entertainment and festivities including star-studded musical performances. Giant video screens alert those assembled to the timeline also channeling entertainment in anticipation of the magical moment. The actual Ball Drop, staged to culminate at exactly midnight, takes one minute and the completion of its descent signals the start of the New Year and all its promises.
