Whitewater Raft/Kayak
Bear Trap Canyon (Madison River), Montana
View Original Description
Blue-ribbon trout stream, tubers’ delight, hikers’ paradise—whatever you call it, the Madison River is one of the most scenic spots in southwestern Montana. The Bureau of Land Management’s Dillon Field Office manages more than a dozen recreation sites along the gin-clear waters of the river. The Madison River starts where the Gibbon and Firehole rivers come together at Madison Junction. The Madison River flows west 23 miles before exiting the park.
The crown jewel of the Madison River system is the Bear Trap Canyon Wilderness, one of the four units of the Lee Metcalf Wilderness. The Bear Trap Canyon is the first wilderness area to be managed by the BLM. The 6,347-acre area offers beautiful wilderness scenery plus exciting whitewater rafting featuring the famous Class IV - V “Kitchen Sink” rapid. The 1,500-foot cliffs that border the canyon provide a dramatic backdrop for nature study, hiking, sightseeing, whitewater rafting and fishing along the nine-mile Bear Trap Canyon National Recreation Trail.
