Cottonwood Cove is located at Coyote Buttes South in the BLM-administered area in the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, located in northwestern Arizona.
It's takes a couple of hours to get from Page, Arizona to Cottonwood Cove, camping on-site is the best option to get early morning photo shots.
There is a trail starting along House Rock Valley Road by first following a tributary of Coyote Wash then climbing right over the Coyote Buttes ridgeline and descending towards Cottonwood Spring. Or off-road up Pine Tree Road from House Rock Valley Road - a high-clearance 4WD vehicle is required to access this area.
You must have a permit to visit Coyote Buttes South. Permits are available for day use only. There is a daily limit on permits. In December, January, and February Coyote Buttes South online permits rarely sell out quickly. Walk in permits are also available the day before you wish to hike via lottery at the Grand Staircase Escalante NM visitor center in Kanab. Unsold same-day or next day permits are available either in Kanab or at the Paria contact station near milepost 20 on Highway 89.
